We at Musicalypse have been considering featuring singles for a while now, but haven’t quite gotten inspired to do it. However, 2019 has been a year of great new music, so when Smackbound released “Drive it Like You Stole It,” we knew it was time to get these features going!
Originally known as the cover band, Run for Cover, Smackbound is made up of Netta Laurenne, Teemu Mäntyharju (Wintersun), Rolf Pilve (Status Minor, Stratiovarius), Vili Itäpelto (Seraphiel), and Tuomas Yli-Jaskari (Tracedawn).
While on my first listen, I wondered if this single was too poppy to be taken seriously, my second listen enlightened me. Thinking of pop artists like Pink who are on the more hard rock side of pop, Smackbound felt like the opposite – a hard rock band with the best parts of pop (the hooks and catchiness). Keeping the respectable guitar melodies and Laurenne’s incredible whiskey rasp in the foreground (remember Maggy Luyten from Ayreon? Like that!), they create a fantastic upbeat hit that is both easy to rock out to and beautifully empowering. Nothing ruins a great rock band like hollow lyrics, but “Drive it Like You Stole It” is both severely clever and a really cool message that anyone can relate to.
Stay tuned for their next single, coming out in September, and their debut album, which will be out in early 2020! We’ve been holding our breaths for a modern Roxette, and this might just be the thing to curb that craving!
