Bear:
1. Best New Band/Discovery – Daimonic
2. Best Collaboration – “The Unfound Song ” by Project Legion X
3. Best Cover Song – “To the Moon and Back” by Shiraz Lane, originally by Savage Garden

In 2013, I was supposed to do a farewell interview with Mikko Salovaara from Kiuas, but we were never able to coordinate our schedules. The time passed, the interview never happened, and I was left with the knowledge that he had something in the works but no idea what it was. Leverage? Nah, they’re established. Metal de Facto? Couldn’t be, he was one of the last to join that band. But now, as of December 2019, we have an answer! Kiuas 2.0 has been revealed to be Daimonic and from what we’ve heard released so far, it was worth the 7-year wait! More material ASAP, please?

From what I understand, Project Legion X is a collaborative project that has different vocalists (or was it musicians?) in each song. Though they’ve only released one song so far this year, but it’s extremely cool and Mikael Salo on vocals continues to show us that he’s got a voice worth hearing. If they keep popping out collaborations like this, they’ll be staying on our radar for sure.

I’m not sure if Shiraz Lane released their cover of “To the Moon and Back” by Savage Garden so late in the year because of the Best Tour Ever pt. 1 coming up right away, but nevertheless, they did a pretty great job of putting a modern twist on a song that I haven’t heard since I was a wee young teenager. It’s a nostalgia track for sure, and the original is really cheesy, but maybe that’s why this version works so well!

Lene:
1. Best New Band/Discovery – Daimonic

I’m not exaggerating in the slightest when I say this is the band I’ve waited for most of the past decade after Kiuas called it quits back in 2013 – and probably wouldn’t be far off to suggest I’m not the only one in our staff or my general circle of friends who feels the same way [ed: I can attest to this]. Exhilaratingly Kiuas-like in their sound but taken up a notch, and especially Mikko Salovaara‘s delightfully powerful vocals (the best move the band could’ve even made, really) make Daimonic a thing that I will very likely unashamedly flail about for the next few years at least. A perfect gift from this decade to take into the next.
